Fatigue

What is fatigue?

Fatigue is a common symptom that can have many different causes. At its core, fatigue refers to an overall feeling of tiredness, lack of energy, and exhaustion that doesn't go away with rest or sleep. While occasional fatigue is normal, chronic fatigue that persists for weeks or months can be a sign of an underlying medical issue.

There are two main types of fatigue:

- Physical fatigue refers to the muscles feeling weak or sore, like after a strenuous workout. This type of fatigue is usually temporary and goes away after resting.

- Mental fatigue refers to difficulty concentrating, reduced motivation, and feeling emotionally drained. Mental fatigue can occur even without physical exertion.

Fatigue can stem from lifestyle factors like lack of sleep, poor diet, inadequate physical activity, stress, or overexertion. Medical conditions like anemia, depression, cancer, heart disease, hypothyroidism, and autoimmune disorders can also cause debilitating fatigue. Even infections like the flu or common cold can leave you feeling run down for weeks.

Some key symptoms of fatigue include:

- Overall lack of energy and feeling rundown - Feeling sleepy during the day despite sleeping at night - Difficulty concentrating or completing tasks - Lack of motivation to do activities you normally enjoy - Feeling irritable or moody - Headaches, muscle aches, weakness, dizziness - Slowed reaction time and reduced performance

If you regularly experience any of these symptoms, consult your doctor, as fatigue may indicate an underlying health problem. Getting enough high-quality sleep, eating a balanced diet, exercising, and reducing stress are all important ways to help combat everyday fatigue. But if lifestyle changes don't help, medical tests may be needed to diagnose any disorders contributing to your fatigue.
